Sunny Girl X Dawson High Spirit

Meet the proud parents of our May 2024 litter!

  • Exuberant, loving girl with a sense of adventure and love for art. Seriously though, she spends her days hiking the trails or assisting her artist human in the painting studio. Has no copies of the AMS, NCL or Lemon coat colour gene.

  • Energetic, boy who enjoys running canicross races with his owner. Dawson is a field trial and dog show champion.

Breeding History

Sunny is a beautiful, athletic and loving French Spaniel who is adored by her family; Sarah and Bruce Carlson and their two young children in Burlington, Ontario. She enjoys hikes, boat rides, camping and time spent in Sarah’s art studio gallery. Sunny comes from an amazing line of French Spaniels hailing from the Paterpuppies beloved Romi Diotis and Ginger lineage.

Louise and Dave Paterson got their first French Spaniel Romi from Quebec in 2008. Their five children were thrilled with this addition to the family and Romi is great with kids, gentle, and a lot of fun. She has brought much joy to the family and continues to do so now in her 17th year! She has been on many hikes, camping and canoe trips, trips to the cottage and over the years has been the official greeter at the front door, convinced that folks are visiting especially to see her. The French spaniels are beautiful dogs and soon people were asking about her breed and where the Patersons got her.  It wasn’t long before someone suggested that they should consider breeding her because of her beauty and good character. That began many discussions with the breeders in Quebec and eventually led to Romi having two litters. The Club de l’Epagneul Français are very protective of the French Spaniel breed and care was taken to ensure that Romi was in good health and excellent males were suggested as mates.
For Paterpuppies’ second litter, Romi was bred with Merlin (CH Lagibeciere Merlin Fox) and produced 6 beautiful puppies. Merlin was a handsome, obedient champion and they were thrilled to have him as a sire. One of Romi and Merlin’s pups is Ginger. Ginger is a wonderful family dog with a friendly disposition and beautiful form and so in 2018 it was Ginger’s turn to take a road trip to Quebec to meet the handsome, calm champion Choco du Nordet. Ginger had six beautiful puppies, one of which is Sunny.

Wanting to continue this beautiful line, Sarah and Louise reached out to Josée Ouellette of Élevage de l’Amadis Épagneul Français to find an excellent sire for Sunny. Josée’s French Spaniel and breeding experience spans over 15 years and her expertise and mentorship is invaluable. She recommended High Spirit Dawson de l’Amadis who is a handsome, accomplished male who is a champion at Canicross races, hunting trails and dog shows. After a long road trip to Amherst Quebec, we are excitedly anticipating Sunny and Dawson’s litter in May 2024!

The French Spaniel Breed

Origin

One of the oldest pointing dogs, the stately French Spaniel first gained fame in the Middle Ages. Well known in the 17th century, French Spaniels were depicted in engravings seeking out pheasants and partridges around Versailles. A dog of strength and stamina, the French Spaniel shares the distinction with the Irish Water Spaniel of being the largest of the spaniel breeds. The breed was nearly extinct in the 20th century but revived by Abbé Fournier, a French priest who decided to dedicate the rest of his life to saving the French Spaniel in 1906. This ancient breed was first brought to Canada in 1974 and was given official CKC recognition in 1985.

Temperament

Calm, intelligent and easily trained, the French Spaniel makes an excellent family pet as well as sporting companion.

Activity Level

As a methodical worker in the field, the French Spaniel is equally adept at pointing and retrieving and performs well on land or in water. A hardy breed that likes to cover ground, the French Spaniel requires a fair amount of exercise to stay in top shape.

Height/Weight

An adult male will measure from 22-24 in (56-61 cm) at the shoulder. They are a medium sized breed and usually will weigh between 40-60 lb.

Coat

The French Spaniel wears a medium-length weatherproof coat. There is moderate feathering on the chest, underbelly and back of the forelegs. The natural tail sports a fair amount of fringe.

Colour

The coat is white with brown markings.

Grooming

A minimal amount of brushing is all that’s needed.
